“Arctic Plankton: They Emerge"


Plankton are the most populous organisms in the ocean. They range from microscopic organisms such as diatoms and protozoa up to jellyfish and ctenophore colonies that can reach thirty meters in length. Rick Morris shot the plankton in They Emerge during a science cruise in the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound, as part of a twelve year long sampling study called the "Seward Line".

Producer Rick Morris has been an active diver for more than 40 years, a scuba instructor for nearly 20 and worked in the television and film industry for over 30 years.
.

He began to produce and shoot pro-environment documentaries based on the aquatic environment 10 years ago and has worked on productions for nearly every network and a host of non-profit organizations like, National Geographic, PBS, ABC, NBC, CBS, The New England Aquarium, Oceana, the Conservation Law Foundation, The international Fund For Animal Welfare and many more. Rick works for the Census of Marine Life Project, a 10-year study, involving more than 2000 researchers from 80 countries, of the diversity, distribution and abundance of all animals in the oceans, past, present and future.  He shoots the archival and documentary footage to cover the final 2.5 years of the Census, which concludes in October of 2010.

In addition to his position with the Census of Marine Life and The Encyclopedia Of Life, he is currently working on a three part series on the History of the world’s Oceans for National Geographic and produced by Gruppe 5 Film Production in Bohn Germany.
